I don’t understand how so many people smoke cigarettes. They have always grossed me out, but recently in this past year as I’ve gone to college and all I’ve come into contact with them more and more. Watching friends and coworkers smoke just makes me more solid in my choice to not smoke. I mean yeah it’s felt a little awkward at times during social gatherings when I’m the only one not smoking, but besides that watching people spend money over these stupid little flammable sticks that yes, give temporary relief but nothing but bad long-term effects just seems so stupid to me. I don’t mean to sound close-minded or arrogant, but most people I know that do smoke or have smoked for years regret ever starting in the first place. I know quite a few hypocrites who saw what it did to other people and swore they never would and now here they are smoking all the time and trying to defend their decision. In my opinion, it’s just admitting weakness. If you can’t get through your day without a cigarette there’s a problem. I watched my mom try and fail to quit so many times and even after she realized she was dying and smoking was not helping she still could not muster up the strength to quit. What the hell. I just want to barge into a tobacco company and be like “Do you really realize what you do, you stupid money-grubbing bastards?!” like I understand everyone needs jobs and all, but come on. This is ridiculous. Everyone I work with smokes and they lose money in two ways. One because they buy overly-expensive packs and secondly I’m out in the dining room taking tables and extra money while they’re in the back having a cigarette. I never want to be working and think “I need to hurry up so I can run to the back to smoke”. No, I want to be focused on my job and yeah it’s stressful and all but LIFE is stressful and if you can’t get through one shift without a cigarette you either need a new job or a healthier way to manage your stress because it’s not going to get any easier.
Whatever. I just really hate them. And I don’t want to watch more people I love die because of them.
